Credential program on the practitioner path
Foundation Certificate in Computational Finance
The entry quantitative finance certificate. Four Foundation courses that fix the probability, statistics and Python every later course assumes, and a first look at how trading systems are built.
Most people who struggle in quantitative finance courses do not struggle with finance. They struggle because their probability is rusty, their statistics stopped at a regression table, or their code cannot load and clean a price series. This quantitative finance certificate fixes those three things first, and then shows how they come together in a rule-based trading system.
What does the Foundation Certificate cover?
Probability for Quantitative Finance covers random variables, distributions, expectation, conditioning and the limit theorems that make simulation and estimation work. Statistics for Finance and Trading covers estimation, hypothesis tests, regression and the specific traps of financial data: fat tails, dependence and multiple testing. Python for Finance covers the working toolkit: pandas, NumPy, plotting and clean data pipelines for prices and returns. Algorithmic Trading Foundations puts the three together in a first strategy, from rule to backtest to honest result.
Who should take it?
Engineers and scientists new to finance, finance graduates whose quantitative training is thin, and anyone planning to take a practitioner or researcher credential who wants the prerequisites settled in one program.
The courses in this program
- Probability for Quantitative Finance The probability every quant course assumes: distributions, expectation, conditioning and the limit theorems, with each idea tested on real return data.
- Statistics for Finance and Trading Estimation, testing and regression for financial data, with the traps that make trading research go wrong: dependence, fat tails and testing too many ideas.
- Python for Finance A Python for finance course with the Python every later course assumes: loading and cleaning market data with pandas, computing returns and risk with NumPy, plotting, and writing code another person can rerun.
- Algorithmic Trading Foundations An algorithmic trading course on the working basics: how electronic markets match orders, the order types an algorithm uses, three simple strategy families, the costs of trading, and a first backtest you can defend.
Is this credential accredited?
No. It is an unaccredited Institute credential. It records that you passed every assessed component listed on this page, marked by the Institute's faculty. It is not a university degree and is not issued by Carnegie Mellon University. Each credential carries a verification code that an employer can check with [email protected].
Questions applicants ask
Is there a capstone?
No. The Foundation Certificate is awarded when all four course assessments are passed. Capstones begin with the specialist certificates.
Do I need this certificate before a specialist certificate?
No. It is the recommended start if your probability, statistics or Python are not yet secure. If you can already meet the outcomes listed on each course page, start with a specialist certificate.
Does this certificate count toward anything else?
Python for Finance also counts toward the Certificate in Machine Learning for Trading, and Algorithmic Trading Foundations toward the Certificate in Algorithmic Trading. A course passed once counts everywhere it appears.
How long does the certificate take?
92 hours of study. At eight hours a week, about three months.
